Redact PDF Content Online
Place solid black redaction boxes over sensitive text, personal data, and private information in PDF documents. Works in the browser — nothing is uploaded.
Sharing a PDF that contains information that should not be visible to the recipient requires redaction — covering the sensitive content before sending. Typical cases include removing personal details from a document before sharing it with a third party, blocking out pricing or confidential terms in a proposal before forwarding a reference copy, and covering private information in a scanned form for compliance review.
This PDF editor includes a redaction tool that places solid black overlay boxes over any area of a page. You can snap redaction boxes directly onto detected text runs with a single click, or draw them freely over images, tables, and other content. All redaction boxes embed in the exported PDF as solid opaque rectangles.
Important: the redaction boxes in this tool are visual overlays. The underlying text in the original PDF is not removed from the file data. For documents requiring permanent, forensic-quality redaction where the underlying content must be provably unrecoverable, a professional PDF redaction tool is required. This tool is well-suited for review copies, internal distributions, and cases where you control how the document is used.
Features
Click-to-Redact Text
Activate redact mode and click any detected text block to instantly cover it with a solid black box sized to the exact text boundaries. Faster than drawing boxes manually over each line.
Free-Form Redaction Boxes
Click anywhere on the page to place a redaction box in custom size. Drag it to position, then resize using the property panel. Works on images, tables, signatures, and any visual area.
Processed Entirely In-Browser
The document and your redaction choices never leave your device. No server processes the file. The exported PDF is generated locally.
How It Works
Upload the document from your device. It opens in the page canvas.
Click the Redact button in the page canvas toolbar. The tool highlights detected text blocks as clickable targets.
Click any text block to immediately cover it with a solid black box. A small "Redacted" label appears inside the box in the editor view to help you track which areas have been covered.
Click empty areas of the page to place custom-sized redaction boxes over images, headers, signatures, or any area without detected text. Resize and reposition using the controls.
Scroll through all pages to confirm complete coverage, then download the redacted PDF.
When Visual Redaction Is the Right Approach
Visual redaction covers content so it cannot be read in normal viewing contexts. This is appropriate for many common sharing and distribution scenarios where the goal is preventing casual access to information — not permanently destroying the underlying data.
Common fits include preparing a document for review by a party who should not see certain details (a subcontractor receiving a scoped version of a larger contract), removing personal details from a sample or template document before sharing it as a reference, blocking out irrelevant sections of a long report to focus a reader's attention, and covering sensitive fields on a form before using a screenshot in documentation or training materials.
The important limitation to understand: this tool places overlay rectangles in the PDF. The original text beneath the overlay still exists in the PDF file structure. Someone with technical knowledge and the right tools could potentially extract the text content from the underlying file. The visual appearance is clean — the areas appear as solid black boxes in every PDF viewer — but the file-level data has not been removed.
For workflows that require permanent, provably unrecoverable data removal — GDPR compliance, legal discovery responses, FOIA-redacted government documents, or court filings — a compliance-grade redaction workflow at the file-data level is required. This tool handles the full range of practical redaction tasks for sharing, review, and internal distribution; those regulated contexts require a separate specialized tool.
